Monday 28th August 2023: Sisk are delighted to have launched the Skills Hub on-site at Birmingham’s latest high rise residential project, Great Charles Street.
With support from West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and the developer, Moda Living, the Skills Hub offers local people free construction training and a guaranteed job interview at the end of the 20-day course.
The new hub at Moda Living’s Great Charles Street development is expected to create 106 new construction jobs, with roles for local people including apprenticeships, graduate and general roles. This follows a similar project at The Mercian, another Moda and Sisk partnership, where 140 job opportunities were created during the development of Birmingham’s tallest residential building.
The Great Charles Street project is transforming an undeveloped, 70-year-old former council car park into 722 rental apartment homes of up to three bedrooms, together with amenities. The neighbourhood is spread across three blocks, varying in size up to 39 stories.
Simon Dingle, regional project director, John Sisk & Son, said: "We are thrilled to be able to apply our successful approach once again to our Great Charles Street project. Looking ahead, we're excited to leverage this proven model for the project, creating even more job prospects, including apprenticeships, and continuing our commitment to local communities and businesses beyond the construction phase."
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “One of our key tasks as a region is to equip local people with the skills they need to succeed - providing them with a pathway into high quality job opportunities close to home.
“That’s why it’s great to see Moda Living and Sisk - the forces behind The Mercian on Broad Street and now the much awaited rejuvenation of the long derelict ‘Bomb Site’ off Great Charles Street - collaborating again to continue creating opportunities for residents to gain invaluable construction skills.”
