Friday 12th November 2021: Today’s supporting theme for World Quality Week is Health and Wellbeing.
Richard Butler, Head of Occupational Health & Wellbeing, John Sisk & Son shares some thought leadership on how we are striving to create the environment where a positive culture can flourish.
“We’re all familiar with the cliché that a business’s most important asset is its people. There’s a reason why we hear it so often - because it’s true.
Happy, healthy and engaged employees equals high-quality work at an individual level and improves performance at an organisational level.
The question is why do we invest in health and wellbeing? At a very human level, we care. We want to shift the mindset from “Get home safely and as healthy as when you arrived” to one of “Go home armed with information, awareness and motivation to make healthier lifestyle choices”. In essence, our workplaces should be about promoting better health, not about preserving our current health.
Fostering a positive culture of health and wellbeing is good for the individual. But it’s also good for the organisation. It helps attract high quality people, improves retention, boosts employee engagement and motivation. This ultimately has a positive impact on a person’s performance. Quality of work improves, focus is better and they are less likely to be involved in health and safety incidents. A win-win, for both employee and organisation.
Our approach to health and wellbeing is through the holistic lens of our Four Pillars of Wellbeing: Emotional, Financial, Physical and Social Wellbeing.
For us, that includes our growing Health and Wellbeing Team, our informal peer support programme I Am Here and our dedicated Wellbeing Champions.
We believe that it is through our investment in all four pillars of wellbeing that we are creating an environment for our employees to be happy, healthy, focused and productive.”
