Pirbright CL2 Facility
Client : The Pirbright Institute
Value : Not disclosed
Sisk have been awarded the contract to complete the design and construction of a new state-of-the-art 3,500 m² in-vitro laboratory facility at The Pirbright Institute site in Surrey.
With capacity to support 90 scientists the facility is designed to national and international Containment Level 2 guidance, including the ACDP ‘The Management, Design and Operation of Microbiological Containment Laboratories’ (HSE, 2010) and best practice allowing work on ACDP Hazard Group 2 pathogens.
The two-storey building is clad primarily in brick to harmonise with the local vernacular and uses a colonnade to signal the entrance. Research laboratories face north, showcasing research activity to the campus whilst offices face south, taking advantage of views over surrounding countryside.
Internally features will include generic and specialist laboratories, together with write up, support, ancillary and plant spaces.
The scheme is targeted to achieve BREEAM Excellent through a combination of passive design (orientation, solar shading and exposed thermal mass), active design (intelligent lighting and heat recovery) and low and zero-carbon technology (roof-top photovoltaic arrays and air-source heat pumps).
